On March 12, 2025, nine European nations (Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the Netherlands) joined forces to establish the Semiconductor Coalition, a major step towards reinforcing Europe’s technological sovereignty and competitiveness in the global semiconductor industry. The initiative, supported by the European Commission, aligns with the European Chips Act and aims to:
- Strengthen the end-to-end value chains
- Accelerate innovation by supporting faster commercialization of research
- Expand semiconductor production across the continent
In their joint statement, the member states say:
We will work towards securing supply chains, developing innovative technologies across the whole semiconductor value chain, supporting startups and scale ups, and ensuring close coordination of our effort”
Why This Matters to the Alliance’s Working Groups?
The coalition’s objectives are directly relevant to the working groups of the European Industrial Alliance for Processors and Semiconductor Technologies, supporting their mission to advance cutting-edge semiconductor solutions, ensure supply chain security, and foster capacity building.
Next Steps
In the coming months, coalition members will collaborate with the European Commission to draft a Declaration on Semiconductor Cooperation, open to all EU member states. This declaration will serve as a roadmap for sustained investment, research collaboration, and industry scaling, ensuring that Europe remains a key player in the global semiconductor landscape.
By fostering unity among governments, industry leaders, and researchers, the Semiconductor Coalition represents a critical effort to fortify Europe's technological autonomy, economic resilience, and leadership in semiconductor innovation.
